Die European Masters Swimming Championships in Rom sind Geschichte und der Rückblick bleibt – trotz organisatorischen Turbulenzen – positiv. Das lokale Organisationskomitee hat, im 2. Durchang von Schwimm-Europameisterschaften in Rom, eine animierte und motivierte Meisterschaft möglich gemacht. Die Stimmung bei Athleten:innen war, wie auch beim «working staff», toll. Das schwimmerische Kräftemessen fand innerhalb einer erfrischenden, positiven und oft herzerwärmenden Atmosphähre statt. Das gegenseitige Wohlwollen war durch alle Jahrgänge hindurch spürbar und resultierte in viele schöne und erheiternde Begegnungen. Und die Stadt Rom bot, wofür sie bekannt ist: Antike Attraktionen an fast jeder Ecke (umschwärmt von unzähligen Touristen zu jeder Tageszeit), wundervolles, mediteranes Ambiente und Temperaturen sowie ausgezeichnetes Essen!

Die Wettkämpfe spiegelten die Organsiation: Die vielen Welt- und Europarekorde wurden enthusiastisch gefeiert und beklatscht und zeugen vom Potenzial und vom andauernden Aufwärtstrend des Masters Swimming. SAS Swiss Alumni Swimming wurde seiner Rolle als nationales Gefäss für team- und staffelorientierte Masters Schwimmer:innen gerecht. Zehn Athleten:innen starteten in Rom. Die individuellen Rennen der SAS-Schwimmer:innen waren beeindruckend und wir freuen uns – aus Sicht von SAS – mit ihnen allen über tolle Zeiten und über die Gold-, Silber- und Broncemedaillen. Bravo und herzliche Gratulation an Josef, Chantal, Heidi und Martin. Bravo an das Team SAS!

Vor allem aber freuen wir uns dann extrem mit ihnen, wenn sich bei den Schwimmer:innen ein zufriedenes Lächeln über die erreichte Zeit und Rangierung im Gesicht breit macht. Denn das soll auch in Zukunft die priorisierte «Benchmark» bleiben. Medaillen und Bestzeiten bleiben – sowohl in Einzel- wie auch in Staffelrennen – auch in Zukunft schwer kalkulier- und noch schwerer erreichbar. Spass und Vorfreude auf einen anstehenden Schwimmwettkampf und auf das Zusammenkommen mit gleichgesinnten Freundinnen und Freunden sind wichtige Motivatoren während anstrengenden Trainings. Die Zufriedenheit über eine fokussierte, optimale Vorbereitung und das damit verbundene Gefühl der physischen Spannung und Leistungsfähigkeit trägt jeden einzelnen gesund und fit in die sportliche Zukunft innerhalb des Masters Swimming.

Team-Experience: Wie immer an grossen internationalen Meisterschaften erschwerten auch in Rom die unterschiedlichen An-/Abreisezeiten und die auseinanderliegenden Unterkünfte, die differierenden Wettkampftage und Renndisziplinen ein kondensiertes Teamerlebnis. Das liegt (und lag in der Vergangenheit schon immer) in der Natur der Sache: Masters Swimming ist – und bleibt – an grossen, mehrtägigen Wettkämpfen eine sehr individuelle und unabhängige Angelegenheit, welche auch einem (respektierten) Budgetdenken unterworfen wird.

Staffel-Experience: Die Staffeln am Donnerstagnachmittag und am Samstag boten die Ausnahme für ein grosses «get together» des ganzen Teams in Rom. Und hätten die Chance für ein tolles Teamerlebnis geboten. Hätten – denn Fehler in der Planung im Vorfeld sowie Fehlinformationen vor Ort haben dazu geführt, dass von den geplanten acht Staffeln nur gerade vier antraten und das Rennen beendeten. Das ist sehr schade und wird sich in Zukunft – in dieser Art, und in diesem Ton – nicht mehr wiederholen. Die Learnings hierzu sind:

1) Staffelmeldungen: Die Staffeln müssen im Vorfeld der Meisterschaft gemeldet und bestätigt sein! Vor Ort bedarf es keiner Diskussionen, Sicherstellung oder Organisation mehr [PLANUNGSSICHERHEIT].

2) Staffelorganisation: Die SAS-Staffeln sind allen involvierten Schwimmern:innen bekannt und die vier Staffelschwimmer:innen kennen sowohl Startzeit wie auch den gemeinsam vereinbaren Treffpunkt [VERANTWORTUNG].

3) Kommunikation: Die Kommunikation (resp. die verwendeten digitalen Kommunikationsplattformen vor Ort) innerhalb des Teams müssen im Vorfeld der Meisterschaft besprochen und vereinbart werden. Die Schwächen von digitalem Informationsaustausch – bei aller Dienlichkeit und Bequemlichkeit – sind bekannt. Diesem Umstand ist Rechnung zu tragen, indem eine gegenseitige, vorausschauende Vorbesprechung und Planung innerhalb des Teams und – letztendlich – der Staffeln stattfindet [PLANUNGSSICHERHEIT].

Masters Swimming wird – trotz allen planerischen Vorsätzen – auch weiterhin mit (manchmal sehr) kurzfristigen, gesundheitlichen und/oder altersbedingten Hürden (oder Ausfällen) konfrontiert werden. Das gilt nicht nur für SAS, sondern ist sicherlich ein Thema, von welchem alle Teams an allen Wettkämpfen bedroht sind. Das ist eine zu respektierende Begleiterscheinung des Erwachsenensports. Die genannten Vorsätze sollen aber helfen, zukünftige Ausfälle, Nervositäten und Animositäten zu minimieren. Und sie sollen signalisieren, dass jede:r Einzelne das (persönlich) Möglichste tut, an dem bevorstehenden Wettkampf anzutreten und für die Staffeln optimalen Einsatz leistet.


Die weiteren Lehren, welche aus Rom mit nach Hause genommen wurden, sind:

5) Leadership: Die Rolle des Teamcaptains (im Vorfeld des Events, wie auch vor Ort selber) bleibt sehr wichtig. Ungeachtet aller Indivualität und Unabhängigkeit der Schwimmer:innen soll der Teamcaptain vor Ort Probleme sammeln und nach Möglichkeit lösen. Er soll die Kommunikation zum Organisator und zum Schiedsgericht kanalisieren und, nötigenfalls, Entscheidungen treffen!

6) Überblick: In Zukunft wird der Rennüberblick [ http://swiss-alumni-swimming.ch/rome2022/schedule.html ], wie er in der Vergangenheit online zur Verfügung stand, auch in Papierform vor Ort einsehbar sein. Der Teamcaptain wird diese Prints entweder zur Verfügung stellen, oder aber er wird diese Aufgabe delegieren.

7) Regeln: Schiedsrichter- oder Organisationskomitee-Entscheidungen werden zu jeder Zeit und in angemessenem Respekt zur Kenntnis genommen, akzeptiert und befolgt. Einzig auf eine faire Anhörung und Evaluation des Anliegens soll und darf beharrt werden.

8) Jahreslizenz: Für internationale Meisterschaften (Europa- und Weltmeisterschaften, internationale Masters Games u.ä.) bedarf es zwingend einer Jahreslizenz von Swiss Aquatics. Sollte es eine Überlappung zwischen der Lizenzperiode* von Swiss Aquatics und der Dauer des Wettkampfes geben, dann ist das Startdatum der Veranstaltung entscheidend darüber, ob die aktuelle Lizenz noch aktiv und gültig für die Dauer des Wettkampfes ist.
* Lizenzperiode 2022/23: 1.9.2022–31.8.2023

Weitere eröffnete Themen wie zB.
- SAS wird nicht erkannt, SAS ist unbekannt,
- die «Marke» SAS ist zu unauffällig und wird nicht als Schweizer Klub erkannt,
- bei der nächsten Meisterschaft soll ein rotes Shirt produziert werden
werden hier nicht thematisiert, sonder situativ und bilateral weiterverfolgt.


Was kommt als Nächstes:

1) Die Lizenzperiode von Swiss Aquatics hat per 1.9.2022 begonnen. Wer sich wieder mit dem Gedanken trägt, verschiedene Wettkämpfe bis Ende August 2023 zu schwimmen, sollte jetzt die Jahreslizenz beantragen:

The European Masters Swimming Championships in Rome are history. The review remains, nevertheless the organisational turbulences, positiv. The local organising comitee provided, in the re-run of European Swimming Championships, an animated and spirited competition. The atmosphere amongst athletes, as well as amongst the working staff, was amazing. Competitions took place in a refreshing, positiv and often heartwarming environment. Mutual respect and kindness was noticeable troughout all age groups and lead to many nice and charming encounters. The city of Rome held its promises: Antique attractions at (almost) every corner (crowded by thousands of visitors, at all times of the day), wonderful mediteranean ambiente and temperatures and – of course – fantastic food!

The swimming competitions reflected the organisation: Many World and European records were enthusiastically applauded and celebrated. These achievements confirm the potential and rising tendency of Masters Swimming. SAS Swiss Alumni Swimming confirmed its role as a national board of team- and relay-oriented Masters Swimmers. Ten athletes joined team SAS in Rome. The individual races did impress and we are happy about all their feats. Just as well about the gold-, silver- and bronzemedals. Congratulations to
Josef, Chantal, Heidi and Martin. Bravo to team SAS!

Most of all we fell happy and satisfied with our swimmers when we spot a pleased and proud smile on their post-race-face, expressing happiness about time and/or ranking. That will remain our prioritised «benchmark». Medals and PB's on international level remain – as an individual as well as a relay – an pretty incalculable and hard to achievable good. Pleasure and joy prior competition and the magic of getting together with friends and like-minded folks in swimming during competition shall remain of high importance and shall carry our swimmers during tough workouts. The satisfaction out of a focused and optimised preparation and the linked feeling of physical tension and capability will help all of the swimmers in a healty, fit and sporty future within Masters Swimming.

Team-Experience: Large international several-days championships impede a condensed team experience. Different travel dates, distant accomodation and differing race schedule make a unified swimming tournament, on masters level, difficult. Rome meant no difference. But that is – as it always has been – in the nature of the event: Masters swimming is (and stays) a highly individual and independent issue. Budgets are seldom limitless and the team members time of presence during an international competition needs to be respected.

Relay-Experience: Thursday evening relays as well as the «Relay-Saturday» offered the exception to the above mentioned. Relays provide the platorm for «get-togethers» for the whole team and could have become an exciting team event. Could have – unfortunately, errors in planning ahead of the tournament in combination with misinformation on-site lead to the situation, that of the eight registered relays only four started and ranked. That is a shame and SAS has to make sure that such errors as well as such behaviour will not repeat in the future. The learnings are:

1) Relay registration process: All relays must be registered and confirmed, prior to the competion! On-site discussions, organisation and changes shall be avoided under any circumstances [RELIABILITY].

2) Relay composition: All relay compostitions are known to all involved swimmers. The four relay swimmers are aware of the starting time and have agreed on a joint meeting point [RESPONSIBILITY].

3) Communication: On-site communication (in particular, the digital communication tools) within the team must have been discussed and agreed. The weaknesses of digital on-site information exchange – regardless of their convenience – is well known. In recognition, a mutual and anticipatory planning and organisation within the team (and the relays) will help to avoid errors [RELIABILITY].

Masters Swimming will remain being confronted – despite all planning and intention – with short-term obstacles, due to health and age related issues and outages. That is not only a SAS topic. That is an to be respected issue within all adult sports that threatens all teams. The previous mentioned learnings shall assist and help to avoid (or minimise) outages, unneccessary excitement and animosities. These intentions shall help each team member to compete at the registered events and to give her/his best for the respective relay.


Further learnings that were identified and brought back from Rome:

5) Leadership: The role of the team captain (prior to, as well as at the event itself) remains important. Nevertheless all individuality and independency of the athletes, the captian shall be capable of recognising, collecting and, if possible, solve problems. He/she shall streamline communication from and to the local organising comitee and/or jury. He/she shall take decistions, if required!

6) Overview: For all future SAS competitions, a race schedule or starting list shall be provided on paper. Recent events only provided race schedules online [ http://swiss-alumni-swimming.ch/rome2022/schedule.html ] which was identified as insufficient. The team captain will either provide such prints, or he/she will delegate this task.

7) Rules: Jury and/or organising comitee decisions shall be respectfully accepted and executed at any times. Only exception is the insisting for a fair hearing and evaluation of the (SAS-) request.

8) Yearly license: International Championships (European and World Championships, international Masters Games) require a yearly license of Swiss Aquatics. In the case of overlapping between the license period* and the duration of a competition, the starting date of the competition is the decisive date with regards to the validation of a yearly license.
* License period 2022/23: 1.9.2022–31.8.2023

Further discussed topics were
- SAS is not recognised (not recognisable) as a Swiss Club,
- SAS should wear a red shirt with «Switzerland» printed on it,
are not detailled here, but will be followed on the occasion of a next international competition and on an bilateral base.

1) The license period of Swiss Aquatics started at 1 September, 2022. All those who are planning to participate on several competitions during 2022/23 are invited (and recommended) to apply for a yearly license:

Only 10 days to go until the start of the swimming competitions. Ken and Josef will attend the 3k open water races between 24th and 26th of August. Below you will find last information for ROMA 2022:

1) Some numbers: 500 volunteers as well as 170 coaches/team leaders will assist the 3'292 athletes during a total of 7'400 single entries and 412 relays from all over Europe. Swimming competitions are split between 2 venues: The Stadio del Nuoto (the Foro Italico) and the BluStadium Pietralata in Rom.

2) Entry List: On the event website you will find the entry list and your registered races and entry times.

3) Accreditation: At both venues you will find information-/accreditation-desks with broad opening times. Get your accreditation in person as soon as possible and make sure to carry your passport / ID with you! Without accreditation you won't get access anywhere at both stadia!

4) Team: Team SAS has been reduced to 10 people (5 women, 5 men), due to injury. That means, relay layouts had to be updated. The new relay compositions (v5) can be downloaded here. The change affects Martin, Timo and Josef.

6) Relays: The most current relay layout (v5) can be found here.

7) Licenses & SAS Membership: All licences (temporary or secondary licence) have been applied for and are authorised by Swiss Aquatics. The invoices have been sent to you via eMail. Please balance the invoices before your leaving for Rome.

8) Contact list: You will receive before start of competition a contact list of the team SAS in Rome. It shows
- Name and date of birth

Ich hoffe, eure Vorbereitung für die European Masters Aquatic Championships verlaufen nach Plan und für euch zufriedenstellend. Mit dem heutigen Datum – 40 Tage bis zum Start der Schwimmwettkämpfe – möchte ich euch einen Update zum Team SAS und zu unserer Zeit in Rom geben:

1) Es wurde ein aktualisierter "Athletes Guide (v1.2)" mit geringfügigen, nicht substanziellen Anpassungen publiziert. Wichtigste News an dieser Stelle: Die Anmelde-Deadline für die Wettkämpfe wurden nach hinten verschoben (vom 17.7 auf den 27.7.2022. Wir akzeptieren deshalb nach wie vor Meldungen bei SAS. Wenn ihr noch Schwimmer:innen kennt, welche mit einer Teilnahme in Rom liebäugeln, dann sollen sich diese Personen so schnell als möglich melden!

2) Das Team setzt sich derzeit aus diesen Personen zusammen. Spätanmeldungen werden immer noch angenommen.

3) Den "Race Schedule" – eine Übersicht aller SAS-Schwimmer:innen in Rom – findet ihr hier. Folgende Aufgabe für euch: Nennt mir, sofern eure Rennen im Race Schedule mit [?] markiert sind, bis am 22. Juli 2022 alle eure angemeldeten Einzelrennen, inkl. den Meldezeiten!

4) Im Race Schedule findet ihr auch den aktuellen Vorschlag zu den Staffelzusammensetzungen. Diese Kompositionen wurden unter Berücksichtigunge von Schnelligkeit, Alter (resp. Altersgruppen) und den bevorzugten (resp. abgelehnten) Schwimmstilen erstellt. Das hat dazu geführt, dass nicht alle SAS-Teammitglieder Staffeln schwimmen werden. Ich hoffe auf das Verständnis der betroffenen Schwimmer:innen.

Solltet ihr Einwände gegen diese Zusammenstellung und euren Einsatz haben, dann schreibt mir so schnell als möglich, aber bis spätestens 22. Juli 2022!

WICHTIG: Nach diesem Datum gehen wir davon aus, dass ihr a) einverstanden seid und b) an den erforderlichen Staffeltagen optimal vorbereitet zur Verfügung steht!

5) Swiss Aquatics Lizenzen: SAS wird in den nächsten Tagen die benötigten Temporär- oder Zweitlizenzen beantragen. Diese werden euch nach Swiss Aquatics Autorisation von SAS in Rechnung gestellt.

6) SAS-Mitgliedschaft: Diejenigen unter euch, welche noch über keine SAS-Mitgliedschaft verfügen, werden wir entweder als Vollmitglied oder, im Falle eines anderen Stammvereins, als Masters Swimming Member, bestätigen. Die Mitgliedschaft wird ebenfalls in den nächsten zwei Wochen in Rechnung gestellt.

7) ROMA 2022 T-Shirt: Sofern ihr an einem solchen SAS-Event-Shirt interessiert seid und noch nicht bestellt habt, dann könnt ihr dies ebenfalls noch bis 22. Juli machen. Nach diesem Datum werden die Shirts bestellt und gedruckt.

8) Reise und Unterkunft: Wir gehen davon aus, dass ihr mittlerweile gebucht habt und untergebracht seid. Bitte lasst uns doch, ebenfalls bis 22. Juli 2022, wissen,
a) wann ihr an- und abreist, und
b) wo ihr untergebracht seid.

9) Wir planen, an einem Abend während der Wettkampfwoche ein gemeinsames Dinner zu koordinieren. Es bieten sich – wegen den Staffelrennen – der Freitagabend (2. September) oder der Samstagabend (3. September) an.

10) Es steht bereits eine Whatsapp-Gruppe für den teamweiten Informationsaustausch zur Verfügung. Bitte benutzt diese Gruppe sehr diszipliniert: Via Gruppenchat aussschliesslich teamrelevante Informationen! Alles andere bitte nur bilateral verschicken. Bilder und Videos in grossen Mengen können in ein dropbox.com-Verzeichnis (der Link folgt noch) hochgeladen werden.

I hope, your preparations for the European Masters Aquatic Championships are developing well and satisfying. Today marks the «40 days to go» until swimming competitions start in Rome. I would like to provide an update from our side and for our days in Rome:

1) An updated "Athletes Guide (v1.2)" has been published. There are no significant changes in it. Most important modification: The registration deadline for all competitions has been moved from July 17 to July 27. Therefor, we (SAS) still accept applications. If you know of swimmers, interested in a participation in Rome, then please let them know to get in touch with SAS as soon as possible.

2) Team SAS consists of these persons. As mentioned above, we still accept applications.

3) The "Race Schedule" – an overview of all races of all SAS athletes – can be found here. Here's a task for you: Please send me all your registered individual races inkl. registered times, if your name is marked [?] on this list! Please do so no later than July 22nd, 2022!

4) The race schedule provides you as well with the current draft of all relay compositions. This draft has been layed out considering the speed of each swimmer, the age (and the respective age group the relay will compete in) and the prefered (or rejected) strokes. This lead to the layout at hand, but as well to the situation, that not all team members will swim relays. I hope for your understanding of the affected swimmers.

If you have objections against these relay set-ups, then please let me know as soon as possible, but no later than July 22!

IMPORTANT: After this date we take it as your approval and the 'GO' for registration. Furthermore, we assume that you will be available and fully prepared for the relays at the respective relay dates!

5) Swiss Aquatics Licence: SAS will take care of all required licences within the next couple of days. After approval by Swiss Aquatics, you will be invoiced by SAS via eMail.

6) SAS-Membership: All of you without a valid SAS-Membership will either be approved a full membership or – in case of another Swiss Club Membership – a Masters Swimming Membership. The membership will be invoiced as well within the next couple of days.

7) ROMA 2022 T-Shirt: If you are interested in the SAS-Event-Shirt but haven't ordered yet, then please do so until July 22nd. After this date, the shirts will be ordered and printed.

8) Travel and accomodation: We assume that you have arranged and booked both. Please let us know until July 22nd
a) when you are traveling to, and when you are leaving Rome, plus
b) where you stay in Rome.

9) We plan for one joint dinner with as many team members as possible during the competion week. Most eligible – due to the relay races – are either Friday night (September 2nd) or Saturday night (September 3rd).

10) There is already a whatsapp-group available for the exchange of information within the team. Please use this chat in an appropriate manner: Within this chat only team relevant information! Everything else please transmit on a bilateral basis. Images and videos (in large numbers) can be uploaded on a dropbox.com folder (link to follow).
